The port's history dates back to 1625 when the Dutch West India Company founded an outpost in the area. Pearl Street emerged as a bustling trading hub, connecting traders due to its location. Over time, the pier extended to South Street, gaining a reputation for its protection from the elements. The port faced setbacks during the American Revolutionary War but quickly recovered.

In 1784, the Empress of China initiated trade between the United States and the Qing Empire. The port played a pivotal role in transatlantic voyages, including the Black Ball Line's regular route from Liverpool starting in 1818. These endeavors propelled New York's rise as a global trade center.

The port's significance grew further with successful maritime trade, including the Red Star Line's establishment in 1822. This transportation network solidified New York's prominence in international commerce, contributing to its status as a major hub.

The famous Fulton Fish Market also located on South Street stands as one of the oldest fish markets in the United States. Although it faced competition from the smaller Maine Avenue Fish Market in Washington, D.C., the Fulton Market held the title of the oldest continuously operating fish market in one location since 1822. However, in 2005, the market was relocated. While the Maine Avenue Market in D.C. (established in 1805) is considered the oldest continuously operating open-air market on the East Coast, the Fulton Fish Market maintains its distinction as the oldest institution with a primarily wholesale function.

Throughout its rich history, the Fulton Fish Market has played a significant role in the commerce and cultural fabric of New York City, serving as a hub for the trade of fresh seafood. Its legacy endures as a testament to the city's vibrant marketplace traditions.
