Minneapolis Art, Foshay Tower Dedication, 1929

Size

The Foshay Tower stands as a proud symbol of Minneapolis' upward trajectory, representing a remarkable milestone in the city's architectural history. This iconic tower holds the distinction of being the first building in Minneapolis to exceed the height of the Minneapolis City Hall, which was completed in 1906. For several decades, the Foshay Tower proudly reigned as the tallest building in the city until it was surpassed by the IDS Center in 1972. This photo was taken in 1929 celebrating its opening.

Equipped with elevators that served all 32 floors, including an observation deck, the Foshay Tower offered both convenience and breathtaking views. In 1957, the elevators were converted to automatic operation, further enhancing the tower's modernity and efficiency. From its opening in 1929 until the late 1960s, a modest fee of 50 cents granted visitors the opportunity to ride the elevator and experience the awe-inspiring vistas from the tower's heights.
