First Woman Senator. According to the Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, Rebecca Latimer Felton was appointed by the Governor of Georgia as a Democrat to the United States Senate on October 3, 1922, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas E. Watson. She served just twenty-four hours, from November 21 to 22, 1922, a successor having been elected.
While it is true that Felton's successor was a man, her courage to accept the temporary position as the first woman to serve in the Senate continued the transformative power of women's voices in the political sphere.
