Suffragette Protestor Pauline Adams, 1917

This is a photograph capturing Mrs. Pauline Adams of Norfolk, Virginia, who was taken into custody while participating in a picketing event outside the White House on September 4, 1917. Subsequently, she received a sixty-day sentence at Occoquan Workhouse. On February 9, 1919, Mrs. Adams was arrested again during a watchfire demonstration, but she was released due to a lack of evidence. Notably, she played a significant role as one of the speakers during the "Prison Special" tour that took place between February and March 1919. In this particular image, Mrs. Adams can be seen defiantly raising a cup in her right hand while dressed in her prison attire.
